Tips

  2. Do not leave any food uncovered. Do not leave the dishes on the worktop overnight.
  3. Hold the stopper in your bath so that cockroaches can not crawl upwards through the drain.
  4. Put moth balls scattered around your house. Cockroaches hate this smell.

How do cockroaches look like?

The German cockroach is about one to two and a half centimeters big and is reddish-brown in color. On their head they have two antennae and they have three pairs of legs. The German cockroach can not fly, but can walk very fast. Catching a cockroach is therefore almost impossible. Because of their flattened body, the cockroaches can hide in very narrow chinks.

Most common types of cockroaches

The type of cockroach that is most common in the Netherlands is the German cockroach. In addition, the American cockroach , a larger cockroach species, also occurs regularly. Alien species such as the Oriental cockroach and the Australian cockroach have come here through international transport and only occur in very hot environments, such as bakeries and greenhouses. In addition, a number of cockroach species are found in the forest. However, we do not find these species in our homes.

Reproduction of cockroaches

Cockroaches reproduce by carrying an egg package. The number of nymphs in the egg package varies per type of cockroach. There are thirty eggs in the egg packet of the German cockroach. In half a year the cockroach takes about four to eight egg packages. The nymphs are sexually mature within two months and start to propagate. This extremely fast way of propagation ensures that a cockroach plague develops in no time.

Development stages of cockroaches

Cockroaches have an incomplete metamorphosis. That means that a nymph comes from the egg. A nymph is a mini cockroach and looks just like an adult cockroach. To grow into adult cockroach, they have to molt several times. These sheets from cockroaches are harmful to our health, just like the droppings and the saliva spores of cockroaches.

Living environment of cockroaches

Cockroaches in your house? Cockroaches do not make many demands on their living environment. They are slightly shy and love warm, humid places. A temperature of twenty to thirty degrees is the ideal living environment for cockroaches. Cockroaches have great adaptability and can survive in many circumstances and maintain their species. This way, cockroaches can easily go without food for a month. Cockroaches are omnivores. From ripe, sweet fruit to a regular fat drop, they eat everything.

Do I have cockroaches at home?

If you have cockroaches in your home, you will certainly see a cockroach running occasionally. You will also find their traces, such as coffee grounds like droppings and shed skins. If you suddenly turn on the lights and you see them shooting somewhere quickly, then you probably have a cockroach plague. In addition, cockroaches spread a very unpleasant odor, which lingers everywhere they come into contact with.

Are cockroaches harmful to your health?

Having cockroaches in your house is not without risks. Cockroaches are carriers of all kinds of diseases, such as salmonella, dysentery and typhus, and transmit them to us. Especially children, the elderly or sick people have a big chance here. The droppings of cockroaches also cause allergies, eczema and asthma.

How do you get a cockroach infestation?

Cockroaches hide in dark seams, cracks and crevices. You often take cockroaches into your home yourself. They are between the groceries or other things that you bring inside. Sometimes the source of the cockroach plague is at the neighbors. The plague continues to expand and occupy your home. A cockroach plague is caused mainly by the rapid propagation of cockroaches. The females of the cockroaches carry an egg package with sometimes as many as 30 eggs per package. Out of the eggs are nymphs, who are mature after five moults. This way the plague grows explosively.
